Choosing an MBA Program
Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees provide students with knowledge of how people and processes operate within organisations and the wider environment affecting those organisations. MBA students are encouraged to develop strong analytical skills which can be applied to organisational problems and issues as they arise and to help them anticipate and prepare for future action.
The origins of Australian university level management education lie in a six-week executive development program first offered by the University of Melbourne in 1956. Since then the number of MBA degrees offered in Australia has grown, with over 40 institutions now offering MBA programs. Every university in Australia has an MBA Program and there are a growing number of other institutions offering specialist MBAs or part MBAs through various universities. There are about 29,000 people in Australia studying for an MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree.
MBA Degree Study Options
There are many University MBA study can be full-time, part-time, evening, distance education and online MBA degree options. Areas covered are general management as well as marketing, information technology, human resources, accounting, project management, e-commerce, finance, entrepreneurship and many more. Some universities also devise specialist courses to meet the specific needs of particular organisations.
Students can enrol in Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master of Business Administration awards, as well as Executive MBAs. Alternative entry criteria are often available, with some institutions not requiring candidates to have completed an undergraduate degree.
Who undertakes an MBA?
People from about 20 years of age to about 70 years of age an MBA degree The majority of students are 30-45 years old. The average age of an MBA student is about 35. About one third of MBA students are women and the average amount of work experience before commencing study is about 10 years, although this varies immensely. Some Programs allow students to commence study immediately after completing an undergraduate degree, with little or no work experience, but most require students to have completed 3-5 years work as a minimum.
